Development of novel DMD RNA-based therapeutics and the discovery of RNA Biomarkers of neuromuscular disorders
DMD is a fatal X-linked recessive neuromuscular disorder caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene. Patients with DMD develop a progressive muscle degeneration and weakness that results in loss of ambulation around 12 years of age leading eventually to premature death due to respiratory or heart muscle failure in their 20’s.
Junyu(Jerry) Huang joined Thomas Roberts team as a Dphil student in June 2023 working on the development of novel DMD RNA-based therapeutics and the discovery of RNA Biomarkers of neuromuscular disorders.
Jerry studied at Imperial College London for his master degree in Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology. There he investigated the effect of viral dsRNA on Treg differentiation under the supervision of Prof Masahiro Ono. Before that, he studied at Sun Yat-sen University in Biotechnology and received experimental skills training supervised by Professor Qing Zhang. During the period, he have won the golden medal in The International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) by designing a targeted cancer therapy platform using endogenous miRNA profile of cancer cells as the target.
