The successful management of acute diarrhoea depends upon correction of dehydration and electrolyte losses followed by maintenance of hydration and nutrition. Pillars of good practice have been defined by the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). They include fast oral rehydration over 3-4 h with hypotonic oral rehydration solution, rapid refeeding with a normal diet as soon as rehydration is complete, continuation of breastfeeding at al times and no unnecessary medications. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd.
