My research focuses on the measurement properties of EEG (electroencephalography) as a surrogate marker of pain in newborns. This EEG metric was developed by my research group, based on the finding that noxious stimuli evoke a characteristic pattern in the neonatal brain. We have used this metric for over a decade in both RCTs and observational studies as a surrogate outcome measure for pain. Working with other members in the group and with INC (International Neonatal Consortium), I conducted a systematic review and individual participant data meta-analysis to assess the measurement properties (reliability, validity, interpretability) of this EEG metric on worldwide data. I also conducted a scoping review to map the breadth of EEG research in acute pain in newborns and to catalogue the methodological details used in worldwide studies.
