REF 2029 consultation policy
|

|
|
The four UK higher education funding bodies for Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029 have launched their consultation on the Open Access Policy. This policy will outline open access requirements for the exercise which have been revised for journals and conference proceedings. There are new requirements for longform publications. The purpose of the consultation is to gather a deeper understanding of sector perspectives on key issues and impacts in relation to the policy proposals. The University will be developing an institutional consultation response; individuals and sector groups are also able to submit responses.
Timeline
- The consultation opened on Monday 18 March 2024 and will close at midday on Monday 17 June 2024.
- Following this consultation, the REF funding bodies will develop and implement the final REF 2029 open access policy.
- The final REF 2029 open access policy will be published in the summer/autumn of 2024.
- It is proposed that the new policy will apply to journal articles and conference proceedings published from 1 January 2025, and longform outputs published from 1 January 2026.

| MSD Bridging Salary Scheme |

| Following discussions at the Finance, Research and General Purposes Committee (FRGPC) about the MSD Bridging Salary Scheme pilot, the MSD team has updated the scheme guidance and eligibility criteria. To be eligible, applicants are now required to have submitted the external funding application that will fund their salary after the bridging period. |

Booking is now available for a range of safety training courses for Trinity term 2024. These can be booked online via the link below and are generally free of charge. Training will be delivered via a combination of classroom teaching and e-learning. Topics include facilities safety, fire prevention and safety in labs and fieldwork.

| The 'Business and Institute Managers' (BIM) Network has been renamed to BOM - the 'Business and Operations Managers' Network. It is open to everyone in an operations role across the University (irrespective of rank, grade and seniority) and creates a safe and inclusive space, with a focus on people who are new to Oxford or their role, and connecting them with their peers. An initial socialising event will take place on Wednesday, 12th June at 1pm at the Institute of Developmental & Regenerative Medicine (IDRM), in the front garden (weather permitting). | Teaching Excellence Awards |

The 2024 MSD Teaching Excellence Awards are open to Collegiate University Staff, whether or not they are, or have previously been, a recipient of an award(s) in another category or categories.
Applicants can apply for awards of up to £5,000 in funding. Projects of any theme are invited to apply, please see our website for full details on eligibility and to download the application form. | Precision proteomics broadens MultiOmics repertoire and enables biomarker discovery |

Olink Proteomics is a Swedish company with strong global presence that enables high-plex protein biomarker discovery and development. Olink’s platform currently has the ability to measure ~5,400 analytes. It’s been used in different settings due to its scalability and actionability and in this seminar, Dr Sarantis Chlamydas, Scientific Affairs Director for MultiOmics, will delve into a series of case studies on the power of its capabilities including:
- How Olink technology enables biomarker identification, precision medicine and multiOmics approaches.
- Examples of Olink technology applied in specific human disease areas.

Join staff and students across the department for a new event taking place in Oxford exactly 70 years since Sir Roger Bannister’s four minute mile. Organised by Oxford University’s cross country and athletics clubs and supported by the university, the community mile is a mass event, open to all abilities and ages from six and above and a Department of Paediatrics group has already be established. Joining the department group is straightforward. Once on the Community Mile entry page, follow these simple steps:
- Click the 'register in group' option.
- Join the 'Paediatrics' group by entering the group password, 'Paediatrics20'.
- Once you have joined the group, click the 'sign up' button at the top of the page and enter yourself individually.
By joining the same group, departmental colleagues will get to start together in the same wave. Later in the day, there will also be a series of track races, including a new World Athletics event - the Mile Steeplechase - which will have past Olympians involved. Top UK para-racers have also been invited to attend and there will be lots of food and drink stalls on site too.

As well as an update from senior management, Associate Professor Caroline Hartley, PI in the Paediatric Neuroimaging Group, will discuss the newly formed Paediatric Analysis Network: a Departmental network that has been established to capitalise on our analysis strengths, share techniques and discuss analysis problems. Caroline will give some examples of the multidisciplinary nature of the work, focusing on the Paediatric Neuroimaging Group, and demonstrating how to develop novel analysis techniques for the advancement of child health research. | Bridging the divide: Translational research with a canine model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy |

There is no cure for the fatal and devastating childhood onset, X-linked disorder, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Many groups, are evaluating novel and sometimes sophisticated treatments, either with a view to replace the absent protein, dystrophin, or to mitigate against the deleterious effects of its loss. Richard Piercy, Professor of Comparative Neuromuscular Disease at the Royal Veterinary College, will discuss the founding of the DE50-MD canine model of DMD, maintained at the Royal Veterinary College, studies conducted that make this arguably the best characterised large animal model of this disorder and our use of the model in clinical veterinary trials, including in gene editing and gene therapies. Phase 1 Nipah virus vaccine trial

|
OVG is looking for healthy volunteers to investigate a new vaccine against Nipah – a viral illness which causes outbreaks. The World Health Organization recognises Nipah as a priority disease to develop vaccines because there are currently none available. The trial vaccine has been developed by the University of Oxford and the study is taking place at the Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine at the Churchill Hospital. If you are aged 18 to 55 years old, in good health and live in the Thames Valley area, then you may be eligible to take part. We will provide reimbursement of £1,020 - £1,380 for your time, inconvenience and travel. The total study participation time is 12 months.
