| The Shining Star Apprentice Award 2023 goes to... |

|
| Caitlin Beane, our very own HR Apprentice who joined the Department of Paediatrics in January 2022, has been presented with the 'Shining Star Apprentice 2023' award by Oxford University.
Charlotte Walber, HR Manager, said: "We are so pleased that Caitlin's hard work and tremendous effort over the last year has been recognised by the University with this award. It is so well deserved. We hope her example will inspire other young people to begin their own apprenticeship journey with the University. These awards are an important way to recognise and reward our staff and they continue to shine a light on the great work happening across the University, delivered through apprenticeships.”
Caitlin said: "I have loved my apprenticeship in HR, as it has given me invaluable hands-on experience alongside the support of an amazing team. Receiving the Shining Star Apprenticeship Award is one of my proudest achievements and I am overjoyed to be staying in the Department of Paediatrics, and excited to continue my career in HR!"

| Requirements for clinical trials |

MSD has asked that the following proposals, relating to clinical trials be brought to the attention of all staff working in the area:
Costing model for commercially-funded clinical studies and trials
A model for charging a sponsorship fee to commercially funded trials has been developed, through consultation with individuals within clinical trials units and benchmarking with equivalent fees charged by comparable institutions. This ‘Sponsorship Fee’ will be calculated by RGEA, at the early stages of discussion with the relevant industry funder and then included in the study costing and contract. The model is based on the characteristics of the proposed study or trial, including such factors as its scale, phase and number of sites.
The department will make payment of the fee to Research Services at the point of sponsorship review. It is not intended that subsequent charges would be made. The exceptions to this would be where there were an excessive number of complex amendments to the trial, that have not been accommodated by any of the criteria involved in the initial calculation, and initiated at the request of the industry partner.
This applies to all studies with a commercial funder.
Use of clinical trials units external to the University
In June 2018 FRGPC required that all Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMP) and Clinical Investigations of Medical Devices (regulatory device trials), sponsored by the University be run through an Oxford UKCRC-accredited clinical trials unit (CTU).
There have been a number of researchers who have been unable to find an Oxford CTU with capacity to take on the oversight of their trial. This may be due to resource issues within the Oxford CTU or, in some instances, a lack of specific expertise relevant to the proposed study being present amongst Oxford CTUs.
Where no Oxford CTU is available to host a University-sponsored CTIMP or regulatory device trial, the University will allow an external UKCRC-accredited CTU to manage the trial. The Research Governance, Ethics & Assurance Team in Research Services (RGEA) will develop a pragmatic process for oversight of external CTUs and their management of University-sponsored CTIMPs. A sponsor oversight fee will be required, to resource this activity in RGEA. It is anticipated that this will be incorporated into the grant application costings in the same way as the CTU costs.
The effectiveness and acceptability of these arrangements will be evaluated after the first year of operation. It is to be hoped that the capacity and scope of Oxford CTUs will expand over time, to address this capacity deficit. However, this would need departments who aspire to increase their trial activities being able to invest to create this additional capacity. |

| Mental Health Awareness in the Workplace |

|
The following workshops on mental health are available for staff to attend. They are aimed at staff who would like to understand more about mental health issues in the workplace and to support colleagues. The fee for attending will be subsidised by the Department and the course content includes:
- Understanding the spectrum of mental health
- Recognising the signs and symptoms of common mental health difficulties
- How to have a wellbeing conversation
- The importance of boundaries
- Managing confidentiality and its limits
- Taking care of yourself when supporting others

Free fitness sessions at the IDRM every Wednesday lunchtime, designed to push you to your limits in a friendly and encouraging environment. The sessions will last one hour and are tailored for all fitness levels: from athletes keeping fit and mixing-up their training, to those who wish to start or returning to exercise.
