| Shining a light on Rare Disease |

| The chapel facade of Magdalen College, Oxford, was awash with colour last Thursday 29 February, to raise awareness of the plight of those living with rare disease and in support of Rare Disease Day. February 29, an exceptional day in its own right, is the awareness day for rare diseases and the illumination was part of a worldwide initiative - a Global Chain of Lights - to highlight the difficulties of the 400 million people internationally who have a unique condition. |

| Finalist for MRC Impact Prize |

Dr Michelle Fernandes, a Clinical Lecturer at the Department of Paediatrics, Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health, and Associate Fellow at Green Templeton College has been selected as a finalist for the Medical Research Council (MRC) Impact Prize 2023, for her cross-disciplinary research in international early child development.

| Professor Caroline Hartley, Principal Investigator, and Dr Marianne van der Vaart Postdoctoral Researcher, in the Paediatric Neuroimaging Group at the Department of Paediatrics, have launched a series of animations aimed at improving parental understanding of brain development in premature infants, and the effect it has on breathing and apnoeas (the cessation of breathing). |

Prof Stewart Cole, Executive Chair of the IOI, will present medium-term plans, including new IOI collaborative calls to support an Oxford-wide AMR network launched with Professor Craig MacLean, Professor of Evolution and Microbiology in the Department of Biology. Over the last year Craig has been working with colleagues across the University to facilitate an Oxford-wide AMR network to increase opportunities for collaborations between researchers and increase the impact of Oxford AMR research.

| A Celebration of DPhil Research |

One of the unique features of the Department of Paediatrics is the incredibly broad range of research topics that are housed within it. The admin team has organised an all-day event dedicated to discovering and celebrating the research that our groups undertake. A Celebration of DPhil Research will be held off site at the Maths Institute on 19th April. It will be a whole day of presentations, posters and shared information about the myriad of projects that our researchers and students are working on – not just DPhils. In addition, Helen McShane will be discussing her work Developing controlled human infection models with old and new pathogens. They’ve also arranged pizza delivery from The White Rabbit – voted 5th best pizza retailer in the UK no less! – as well as copious amounts of drinks and nibbles. The seminar is hosted by Dr. Sithara Ramdas and will be given by Prof Heinz Jungbluth, who is Professor of Paediatric Neurology at King’s College London and Consultant Paediatric Neurologist at the Evelina Children’s Hospital, Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. |

Why Collaborate? International collaboration offers opportunities to expand your academic networks, and amplify the impact of your research.
No Previous Experience with African Research? No Problem! Collaborators do not need a history of working with African researchers and we will guide you through the process.
What's Expected from You? The Oxford collaborators are expected to host the fellows in their respective departments and provide support to engage with researchers, networks and departments in Oxford during the fellowship. This support may take the form of direct collaboration with the fellow on their research project or by acting as a conduit connecting the fellow to scholars, research groups and networks in Oxford with related interests. The Oxford host will be required to send a statement of support indicating their willingness to be the academic contact during the fellowship.

Free Spotlight Tours will be run every Tuesday lunchtime during March from 12.30pm. The tours are designed to 'spotlight' a different plant, feature or area of the garden, giving your wellbeing a boost by connecting with an amazing seasonal highlight of the natural world. Each tour will last approximately 20 minutes. Meet at the Garden conservatory at 12.30pm. Entry is free with a University Card.
