Brazilian Symposium on Controlled Human Infection

The Oxford Vaccine Group last week delivered the first symposium dedicated to Controlled Human Infection Studies in Brazil. It was coordinated by the Center for Vaccine Technology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (CT VAcinas) and held in Belo Horizonte.
Controlled Human Infection Studies, also known as Human Challenge Studies, are a widely used technique in developed countries to accelerate knowledge about an infectious disease alongside the development of a vaccine to treat it. They involve the deliberate and controlled infection of healthy research participants and the procedures follow rigorous technical, scientific, and ethical principles to safeguard the participants.
The symposium aimed to generate debate among Brazilian scientists, bioethicists and technicians on the topic in Brazil which has assumed an important international position in biomedical research.

REF 2029 People, Culture and Environment indicators survey

As part of work commissioned by the REF Funding Bodies to develop indicators for assessment of People, Culture and Environment (PCE), Technopolis have launched a sector survey to gather input, which closes on 13 September. They are inviting academic, research and professional services staff at UK universities to contribute their views, including on aspects of PCE that most effectively support high-quality research and impact, how these aspects might be evidenced, and any potential unintended consequences. The survey, and sector workshops run by Vitae, will contribute to the design of the PCE assessment pilot, in which the University is participating.

Warneford Staff Consultation

All staff are invited to the staff only preview session of the consultation exhibition, for Warneford Park on Monday 9 September between 9am and 2pm at the Day Centre, Main Entrance, Warneford Hospital.  The development is currently at the pre-planning application stage, and this session is part of a wider engagement process, inviting feedback from local stakeholders, community representatives, businesses, service providers, staff, patients and agencies with an interest in the future of the hospital and surrounding site. In partnership with Oxford Health NHS FT, the University of Oxford and partner, the plan is to develop a major brain health research and innovation campus. This will comprise:
  • a new state-of-the-art mental health hospital, offering the best treatment, care, and therapeutic environment.
  • a modern scientific facility for the world-leading brain research taking place at the University of Oxford, with additional space for biotech, pharmaceutical and start-up companies.
  • a new post-graduate college for the University of Oxford focused on medical sciences, bio-engineering and related disciplines.
A team, led by Eric Parry Architects, would like to hear and explore ideas and aspirations for this site, and to look at ways in which we can work together to ensure the project supports the overall long-term vitality of the hospital, patients, staff, and communities in this area.

If you are unable to attend the preview session on Monday 9 September then there are other sessions later the same week which will be open to the public. If you have any questions, please contact the Warneford Project Team via the link below.

Why are so many of us burnt out, and what we can do about it?

26 September 2024 | Online only | Seminar 11-12; Workshop 13.30 to 15.00
Why do ever more of us find it so hard to find a good balance between life and work? The dramatic rise of work-related suffering is clearly not the problem of just a handful of people who are bad at time management.
This seminar will explore some of the deeper cultural reasons for why we are all so burnt out and offer some practical, actionable advice on what we can do about our exhaustion and how we can re-learn how to thrive.
Sign up for the Seminar here: https://forms.office.com/e/0cyFgdacJp
The workshop is now full but please email iris.hofmann@idrm.ox.ac.uk if you would like to join the waiting list.
