About Us
The Department of Paediatrics is one of 16 clinical academic departments within the University’s Medical Sciences Division, and undertakes clinical work and substantial teaching, training and research. The clinical, teaching and research facilities are located within the Children's Hospital, the Women’s Centre, the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, the Peter Medawar Building, the Childhood Cancer Research Group (Richards Building, Old Road Campus) and the Centre for Clinical Vaccinology & Tropical Medicine (CCVTM). We also have a partnership with the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme based in Kenya.
The University Department of Paediatrics was established in 1972 and has a long-standing interest in paediatric diseases and a research portfolio reflecting in diverse aspects of child health. The Department has an annual turnover in excess of £4 million, with more than 65 research grants.
At present, there are approximately 80 people working within the University Department including clinical practitioners, research scientists and support staff. In addition, there are a number of postgraduate students and other academic visitors attached to the Department. Many of the clinical staff also work within the hospitals of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.
